Make Any Shape on the Potter's Wheel | 4 Problems & How to Fix Them

I like to know what you think is cheap cuz I know when I was a kid it used to cost $80 for a block about the size of a loaf of bread and I was 12 then and in private school taking our courses now I'm almost 50 I can't imagine the price has gone down especially since after covid everything went triple price at least here in Canada

Clay is guaranteed to shrink 30% no matter what you're working on unless you read pre-baked play also known as terracotta or sand in the next to reduce the shrinkage

What is the drying shrinkage of this clay? I have started working with a local clay that shrinks 9.5% to done dry and requires a lot of attention and time to the drying of thrown pieces. Even with this care I sometimes lose a piece due to cracking. But the time commitment and occasional loss to cracking is worth it.

Do you add anything extra to your clay such as sand to help temper it or is that not necessary?

Thank you so much! I am only a year and a half into my pottery life and I experience all of these problems from time to time! I’m so appreciative of these videos! Any help and advice is welcome. Do you have expertise in techniques for throwing different clay bodies? I’ve been venturing from b-mix to a 101 and currently trying porcelain. It’s a different experience!

Throw a sack of 25lbs of clay 32 inches high, 18 inches wide into a classic shape or a bottle in 4 minutes 11 sec... toss 40 bags a day... 1000lbs lbs...keep yourself busy...be a potter.

Question. The kind of clay you seperaye from regular dirt in your old videos to make things like this with, can that be used to line a shovel dug hole to make a natural little pond ones land? I live in Oklahoma. I have two acres of red dirt. Can I seperate clay from the hole I am shovel digging amd then use that clay to like the hole to get it to hold rain waterr when it won't hold water right now?

Making things work without ordering or shopping for what you need is pottery history. People always say that you shouldn't use this pot or that pot and curl their lip up at the thought of wild clay mixing or serving bowls.. oh how disgusting, you can't clean them, etc... well, entire generations used crocks and bowls and cups made from wild clay but people like my geandma and her elders knew how to seal them by boiling cornmeal or even rice in those tjings to seal up the pores. It's kinda like using cast iron, it isn't seasoned until you have those pores in the metal sealed up. You do not scrub cast iron with hot soapy water or put it in a dish washer or you will ruin it and have to go through the whole conditioning process again. Cast iron you just rinse and lightly wash with warm soapy water and rinse then dry thoroughly and lightly oul it for next time. Millions of people should have died if pottery was so nasty and disgusting by the way the old timers sealed it for use

Thank you for the video! I have some clay from our families creek/land. I REALLY wish I had processed it immediately. Because it’s been sitting for about 2 years & has dried into a big clump. Now I will have to start the aging process all over again. Uuggh lol. I plan on getting some more and just use that batch for immediate use for fun. We did make a few things unprocessed & it held up ok. It was just for fun & very small items. Thank you for the tutorial!

Hey nice vid - concise, and very informative. I did this repair yesterday afternoon and for the most part, everything went well. However, I could not get my radiator petcock to drain. I tried rodding it out with a small piece of wire, etc. but nothing worked. I ended up having to siphon out all the coolant from the radiator. Also, I’m not sure the petcock was in the closed position when I first looked at it. Pretty sure it was in the 12 to 6 o’clock, i.e. vertical position. I would think if it was closed, it should have been horizontal (3 to 9 o’clock). Please reply and let me know what is the actual closed position for the petcock. I for sure don’t want it to be open - even though it’s plugged. Would be pretty bad if it decided to let loose while going down the highway, ya know? Thanks in advance for your help…

Please do not use the ceramic wool on its own. The fibers are terrible to breath in. You should use a ceramic wool stablizer and castable refractory on top of the wool.

I have a backyard firepit I made of brick, would I be able to kiln in that? If there's any breeze whatsoever, the construction I gave it gives such a strong airflow that it emboldens the fire and creates a nice vortex.
