Tinker & Think combines the manual and the cerebral. I find meaning in the deep focus required to solve practical problems, build things, and manipulate materials, and also in the prolonged concentration required to think through difficult issues and learn new skills and ideas.
Make Any Shape on the Potter's Wheel | 4 Problems & How to Fix Them
These are four problems I often see my pottery students struggle with when learning to pull cylinders on the wheel. I hope these tips help you diagnose what's going wrong, and gives you an idea of how to fix it. If you would like to see a longer, more in-depth video, let me know in the comments.

benshane.com IG: @tinkerandthink Video by liedini This is the first step in my testing of a new wild clay. I make several test bars so that I can measure shrinkage and porosity, and see what color it fires at various temperatures. Future videos will get into the details of what to do with these test bars after firing. These tests will tell me what firing temperature is best for the clay, how to...

3 Tips for Writing Compelling Characters | Advice from Kurt Vonnegut
In 50 years I've never heard a Potter use the term grog
I like to know what you think is cheap cuz I know when I was a kid it used to cost $80 for a block about the size of a loaf of bread and I was 12 then and in private school taking our courses now I'm almost 50 I can't imagine the price has gone down especially since after covid everything went triple price at least here in Canada
Gray clay is hard to find but you can get it tends to come out like ceramics rather than pottery
Gray yellow white clay they're always hardest to find ribs and Browns you can usually get from an ocean or river or landlocked area with nature
Clay is guaranteed to shrink 30% no matter what you're working on unless you read pre-baked play also known as terracotta or sand in the next to reduce the shrinkage
Beautiful colours copper andturquoise from outside inside amazing work.
Excellent video and explanation. Thank you VERY much for sharing your knowledge.
clay is a grain size not a mineral sir
Thank you 🙏🏽 😊
What is the drying shrinkage of this clay? I have started working with a local clay that shrinks 9.5% to done dry and requires a lot of attention and time to the drying of thrown pieces. Even with this care I sometimes lose a piece due to cracking. But the time commitment and occasional loss to cracking is worth it.
Do you add anything extra to your clay such as sand to help temper it or is that not necessary?
Really fascinating content Equally distracting unibrow
Thank you so much! I am only a year and a half into my pottery life and I experience all of these problems from time to time! I’m so appreciative of these videos! Any help and advice is welcome. Do you have expertise in techniques for throwing different clay bodies? I’ve been venturing from b-mix to a 101 and currently trying porcelain. It’s a different experience!
Throw a sack of 25lbs of clay 32 inches high, 18 inches wide into a classic shape or a bottle in 4 minutes 11 sec... toss 40 bags a day... 1000lbs lbs...keep yourself busy...be a potter.
Question. The kind of clay you seperaye from regular dirt in your old videos to make things like this with, can that be used to line a shovel dug hole to make a natural little pond ones land? I live in Oklahoma. I have two acres of red dirt. Can I seperate clay from the hole I am shovel digging amd then use that clay to like the hole to get it to hold rain waterr when it won't hold water right now?
Thanks for informative VDO.
Making things work without ordering or shopping for what you need is pottery history. People always say that you shouldn't use this pot or that pot and curl their lip up at the thought of wild clay mixing or serving bowls.. oh how disgusting, you can't clean them, etc... well, entire generations used crocks and bowls and cups made from wild clay but people like my geandma and her elders knew how to seal them by boiling cornmeal or even rice in those tjings to seal up the pores. It's kinda like using cast iron, it isn't seasoned until you have those pores in the metal sealed up. You do not scrub cast iron with hot soapy water or put it in a dish washer or you will ruin it and have to go through the whole conditioning process again. Cast iron you just rinse and lightly wash with warm soapy water and rinse then dry thoroughly and lightly oul it for next time. Millions of people should have died if pottery was so nasty and disgusting by the way the old timers sealed it for use
Yep, the Bible even says God formed Adam from the clay. The name Adam even comes from the meaning of ruddy or reddish colored like blush or red clay 😊
They were salt glazing pottery here in the states since the first kilns were built here. Thats what I want to make after I get my kiln built, no fake crap..just salt
Absolutely helpful. Thank you!!
Stunning! But wish you had shown the whole process of firing and redux.
Thank you for the video! I have some clay from our families creek/land. I REALLY wish I had processed it immediately. Because it’s been sitting for about 2 years & has dried into a big clump. Now I will have to start the aging process all over again. Uuggh lol. I plan on getting some more and just use that batch for immediate use for fun. We did make a few things unprocessed & it held up ok. It was just for fun & very small items. Thank you for the tutorial!
Very well-done. Thank you. Your viewers might also care to take a look at Andy Ward's and also Tony Soares' videos on "primitive techniques." Cheers!
Hey nice vid - concise, and very informative. I did this repair yesterday afternoon and for the most part, everything went well. However, I could not get my radiator petcock to drain. I tried rodding it out with a small piece of wire, etc. but nothing worked. I ended up having to siphon out all the coolant from the radiator. Also, I’m not sure the petcock was in the closed position when I first looked at it. Pretty sure it was in the 12 to 6 o’clock, i.e. vertical position. I would think if it was closed, it should have been horizontal (3 to 9 o’clock). Please reply and let me know what is the actual closed position for the petcock. I for sure don’t want it to be open - even though it’s plugged. Would be pretty bad if it decided to let loose while going down the highway, ya know? Thanks in advance for your help…
you use ºC or ºF?
Please do a video on opening!
Thanks! 😄
Absolutely Beautiful & absolutely what I was searching for… Finally, Thsnk You!
Please do not use the ceramic wool on its own. The fibers are terrible to breath in. You should use a ceramic wool stablizer and castable refractory on top of the wool.
Just found your channel. Great work!
The guy is explainin everything so simply that I simply❤him
Wait oven can heat up up to 500 degrees? I think max they can heat up to 230 degree celcius..or is it 500 in farenheit?
Thank you ... I haven't tried it yet but it makes sense ❤
i dont have a yard... sadge
Please dont do this. The insulation fibers can cause cancer.
👍
Thank you so much for such an educational video. Could kindly share what clay would be best to use for moulding for cement casting? 🙏🏻
❤❤❤❤👏
How much money you make
Question, why not melt beeswax and coat the inner layer of a cup with a fine/thin layer? Wouldn't that allow you to sip from it or even store fluids for like an oil lantern?
I have a backyard firepit I made of brick, would I be able to kiln in that? If there's any breeze whatsoever, the construction I gave it gives such a strong airflow that it emboldens the fire and creates a nice vortex.
Sounds perfect! You'll want to shield the pots from the wind, though. Rapid and uneven temperature changes can cause cracks.
i love the Tilly Pot! fantastic video, thank you
shrinkage is real, also great video
I'm new to ceramics and not great at centering. Sooo...I have been hand building...which I love. But I am going to try your techniques and try to conquer the wheel. I'll never stop hand building...but want it to be a choice and ONE of my skills...not a necessity because I haven't conquered the potter's wheel. Thanks for the great explanation.
I applaud you! I still avoid handbuilding because it intimidates me. I hope you'll let me know how your wheel time goes!
more chemistry please!
Omg the only person I've seen actually explain what it means to brace your arm when centering and not give a 2 second explanation. I've wasted so much clay having no idea how to brace.
Ugh. I'm having a challenging time centering. I'm really trying to adjust my mindset because I really love hand building
Just came across and watched your fascinating post, thank you 🤗 They look really good👌
Where do you purchase your clay in the bag on the table in you video? Do you have a link we can use to order?
I think that was Georgie's clay, but I don't remember what it was. Use whatever clay you want!
looks like i blew up and died after trying to cut an oil canister with a angle grinder thanks alot bro
What a terrible way to go
